Custom GPS trackers: when standard telematics is not enough
Most fleets do fine with a Ruptela, Transics or Teltonika tracker. For the cases they cannot cover, Konvoi builds its own trackers, made to measure the job.

For most transport fleets, a standard tracker from Ruptela, Transics or Teltonika is the right choice: proven, affordable and supported by Konvoi out of the box. But some questions a standard box cannot answer. For those cases Konvoi builds its own trackers: hardware, firmware and sensors made for the job, and in Konvoi from the first day.
Where standard telematics stops
A standard tracker is built for the average vehicle. It reports position, speed, ignition, mileage and, with a CAN connection, fuel level. That covers most of what a fleet needs. It stops where your operation is different from the average:
- A sensor nobody sells. You want to know something about the load, the body or the equipment that no off-the-shelf tracker measures.
- A signal your box does not send. The vehicle has the data, but the tracker you have cannot pass it on.
- A place, not a vehicle. A yard, a gate or a depot that has to report what arrives and what leaves.
- Assets without telematics. Containers and equipment that move between trucks and need to be followed too.
Working around these gaps usually means spreadsheets, phone calls and somebody walking the yard. A tracker built for the case removes the workaround.

An example: container tracking
Konvoi’s container tracking runs on our own trackers. Transport companies see where every container and trailer is, which truck picked it up, where it was dropped off and what it weighed. That is a question no standard tracker answered, so we built the hardware for it.

Questions
When do I need a custom tracker instead of a standard one?
When a standard tracker cannot measure what you need: a sensor that does not exist off the shelf, a signal your current box does not send, or a place such as a yard or gate that has to report what comes and goes. For ordinary vans and trucks, a standard tracker is the simpler choice.
Do Konvoi trackers work next to my existing telematics?
Yes. A Konvoi tracker shows in Konvoi like any other tracker, on the same live map and in the same alerts and reports as your Transics, Ruptela or Teltonika vehicles.
